Hospice of the Upstate exists to provide support and care for patients with a limited life expectancy. We serve Upstate South Carolina and Northeast Georgia. Hospice patients and families are offered a different kind of hope - A hope to maintain dignity, live to the fullest, be free from pain and spend valuable time with loved ones wherever they call home.
Hospice care is not the same everywhere. Hospice of the Upstate is committed to offering exceptional care that is distinctively different:
Hospice emphasizes palliative rather than curative treatment, choosing quality
rather than quantity of life. Support is offered through a personalized plan of
care to ease the many different types of pain facing patients and families during
such a difficult period of time. Different patients require different levels of care.
Hospice of the Upstate responds by offering the level of care that meets the
individual patient’s needs – in the location that is most appropriate and comfortable.
These levels of care include:
Home Hospice Care
Hospice of the Upstate believes in bringing care to wherever you call home, this might be a home, a skilled nursing facility, or an assisted living facility. Hospice of the Upstate strives to provide an environment of care that is comfortable for the patient and their family. This level of care is provided when the patient is not in crisis.
In the Rainey Hospice House, Routine Home Hospice Care is referred to as Residential Care. This level of care is provided when the patient is not in crisis. Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance pay for hospice services but will not pay for room and board fees in the Hospice House.
Continuous Home Care
Sometimes a patient has a medical crisis that needs close medical attention. Continuous home care is provided only during a period of crisis as necessary to maintain the patient at home. The medical crisis requires predominately nursing care to achieve palliation or management of acute medical symptoms.
General Inpatient Care
If pain or symptoms cannot be controlled at home, the patient is admitted to the Rainey Hospice House for symptom management. This is a short-term level of care and is not intended to be permanent. Once the symptom is controlled, discussion will be held with the family regarding future plans. This level of care does include room and board fees. Examples of uncontrolled symptoms are:
Respite Care
Because it is acknowledged that caring for a terminally ill person can be difficult, respite care is available to give the caregiver a rest. It gives the family time to do what needs to be done without the worry of their loved one. Respite care is provided for 5 days. This includes the day of admission, but not counting the day of discharge. This level of care does include room and board fees.
