About Us

The mission of Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the South Carolina Department of Mental Health is to ensure that deaf and hard of hearing adults and children have access to the full range of public mental health services available. By a combination of direct and support services and programs, we provide community, residential and inpatient services in a linguistically accessible and culturally competent approach.

Staff of the Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing are specially trained to meet the needs of clients who are deaf or severely hard of hearing and experiencing mental illness. Several staff are Deaf themselves and all are fluent in American Sign Language.

Services

We provide a variety of specialized assessment and treatment services. The program serves adults and children throughout the state who are deaf or severely hard of hearing and need mental health services. The program provides services with a strong relationship to the Deaf community.

Services Available:

  • Consultation, Education and Prevention. Assessment and Case Management.
  • Clinic and Community Based Services at each of the community mental health centers.
  • Residential Programming.
  • 24 hour-a-day TTY/TT Crisis Line.
  • Inpatient programming
